The notion of “migraine” is determined as follows: a paroxysmal condition which manifests itself by periodically recurring pulsing intense headache attacks predominantly localized in a certain head part, mainly in the oculofrontal and temporal regions, and acvcompanoied by nausea, vomiting, light and noise sensitivity (photophobia and phonophobia), dizziness and apathy after the attack. Virtually, all people (according to world statistics, 75-80%) have at least once in their life have experienced migraine. Migaine affects more women than men: two women out of four suffer from migraine, and the rate of sickness among men just one man out of three. Migraine usually starts to develop at the age of 18-33. The disease usually does not affect children, though rare cases have been known when the migraine affected 5 year old children. After 50 migraine is rarely encountered as an independent diseases. The treatment of migraine consists of two phases: relief of the cephalic attack and prophylactic therapy. In the period of attack due to short-term vasoconstrictive phase it is reasonable to use the analgesics and spasmolytics at the onset, just before severe pain attack. As a rule, most patients use them at the peak of the pain, which is ineffective. One of the best medicines which can help to treat migraine is Imitrex (Sumatriptan).
The medicine is used for improving migraine symptoms. Imitrex is intended for peroral use. The common daily dose is 300mg. The maximal daily dose is 300 mg. If you anticipate a migraine attack, take a tablet of Imitrex right away, before pain starts. Patients with migraine should avoid eating products containing much starch (potatoes, wheat, maize) or thiamine (cheese, dark chocolate, beer, red wine). Hormonal medicines (especially peroral contraceptives) may often provoke migraine. Migraine is a disease of perfectionists. Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Elizabeth and Mary the Tudors, Charlotte Bronte and Virginia Woolf suffered from it.
