Famvir (Famciclovir) is effective for treating herpes virus, for reducing intensity and duration of post herpetic neuralgia in patients with herpes zoster, reduces herpes simplex virus shedding in patients with immunodeficiency and for treating infections caused by Herpes simplex ( primary herpetic infection, exacerbation of herpetic infection) and Varicella zoster (post-herpetic neuralgia). Famvir (Famciclovir) does not affect spermatogenesis or morphology and sperm mobility. Famvir (Famciclovir) treatment should be started right after diagnosis.
For treating acute Varicella zoster a 250 mg tablet of Famvir (Famciclovir) is taken 3 times a day within 7 days. The patients who are at risk to develop post-herpetic neuralgia should take 500mg of the medicine 3 times a day within 7 days. Famvir dose for patients with reduced immune status is 500mg 3 times a day within 10 days.  .
For treating primary herpetic infection the recommended dose of Famvir (Famciclovir) is 250 mg 3 times a day within 5 days. The dose for patients with immune status is 500mg 2 times a day within 7 days.
